CHAT LOG: Catboy!AU: Kitty Cuddles

Sid doesn't exactly shoo Joe out of the kitchen, he just makes a gentle comment to the effect that Don probably would appreciate the company in the living room a lot more than Sid needs the help in the kitchen, and Joe can't argue with that - it was just second nature for him to get up and help, but if he stops to think about it of course leaving your guest alone isn't right either. Don is always so happy to have an excuse to spend time with the two of them, and yet he can't entirely hide that folorn look on his face that says, 'I miss Marvelous already'. Joe doesn't get it, not at all, but he doesn't have to. He walks over to where Don sits and places a hand on his head softly before sitting down beside him, encouraging him to tilt his head and rest it on Joe's shoulder. He doesn't have to say anything, either.

-

Don is just sitting quietly on the sofa when Joe comes back in from the kitchen. He looks up, his ears twitching with interest even as he’s still moping a little over Marvelous being gone. It’s gotten easier being away from him, especially now that he can stay with Sid and Joe while Marvelous goes out to work, but he still doesn’t like it. Don tilts his head up into Joe’s touch when Joe reaches out to lay a hand on his hair, a little chirping purr rumbling in his throat. Joe sits down beside him and Don hardly needs any encouragement to move closer to him, resting his head on Joe’s shoulder and wrapping his arms around Joe’s waist. He rubs his cheek against Joe’s shoulder and curls his tail up to lay it across both of their laps.

-

Joe smiles softly - always easier when people can't actually see it, somehow - as he feels Don's arms tighten around his waist. It's never a painful squeeze, but it is firm, as though Don is holding fast so he won't be swept away. His affection comes so easily and freely, and Joe can remember a little of how that used to feel from when he was very small and surrounded by others. It gets easier to recall every time Don hugs him. Joe lets his hand slide down from Don's hair until it is around his shoulders, and brings his other arm up to encircle him completely. Don's tail is warm and soft across his lap, and he can't resist bringing his own dark and sleek tail around to coil around it too, so they're entwined everywhere.

-

Don lets out a soft sigh at how pleasant it feels to have Joe holding him close. It’s different from snuggling with Marvelous - not that Marvelous is bad at cuddling or anything, far from it. It’s just that being with another catperson is enjoyable on a different level. Joe’s scent is so soothing, so easy to recognize and parse. It’s incredibly difficult for one catperson to mask their intentions toward another, so the idea of doubting Joe’s intent never even crosses Don’s mind. There’s no instinctual questioning urge there like there is with humans (Don trusts Marv deeply by now, of course he does, but there’s no getting rid of that half-second flicker of self-protective doubt that all catpeople get around humans). Don can just relax and ease into Joe’s arms as Joe’s scent tells him that his primary intention right now is to provide comfort. Don twitches the tip of his tail a little as Joe’s tail curls around it. He closes his eyes and nuzzles Joe’s shoulder, letting himself start purring in earnest.

-

The sound of purring is the most obvious indicator - even to humans - of how content a catperson is, and it does lull Joe into closing his eyes and feeling the vibrations run through him. Having Don held so close to him makes his purrs reverberate right through Joe's chest, and his cheek rubbing against Joe's shoulder encourages Joe to tilt his head down a little and rub his own cheek against Don's hair in turn. There are advantages to being taller than him. He also catches Don's ear beneath his cheek a couple of times as he rubs, feeling it yield under his skin and tickle with velvety softness. He knows it might be considered a little rude not to ask after Marvelous, but Joe knows what he's doing already - Don is here because he's at work, and bringing it up might just sadden Don all over again when he's clearly happy the way they are right now.

-

Don mews softly when he feels Joe rest his cheek against his hair. He's already starting to feel relaxed and sleepy just from being close to Joe, and Joe rubbing his cheek against him is such an affectionate gesture that it makes Don feel warm and good all over. At one point Joe catches one of Don’s ears beneath his cheek, and Don whimpers with pleasure, purring all the while, as the thin, sensitive skin is rubbed between Joe’s skin and his own hair. He leans his head forward so that he can nuzzle Joe’s neck with his nose and mouth, and purrs a bit more loudly to try and encourage Joe to purr, too. He knows Joe is kind of shy about purring sometimes, but that just makes it that much more special when Joe does choose to purr.

-

There's a quality to a catperson's body that makes it more flexible, more elastic than a human's body, and it's the other way to tell how relaxed a catperson is, because they seem to melt in your arms and sink into the nearest surface - a bed, the couch, or even another person. It's a special kind of quality that makes them seem near boneless, and lighter when you pick them up, rather than a heavy, dead weight. Joe is so often caught up in the way Don can fall into that state so easily that he doesn't notice Don actually doing things right away. Like nuzzling his neck. Joe mews in surprise as Don purrs louder against his neck, and squeezes him a little to let Don know he doesn't have to stop or pull back, though thankfully Don will be able to tell from his scent that he isn't upset or afraid. Joe's ears even prick up momentarily because of it, and he tries to will away the heat spreading over his face.

-

It’s always a little surprising for Don to hear Joe mew; he’s usually so quiet and stoic that a vulnerable sound like a mew is the last thing you’d expect to hear from him. But it’s not a bad thing at all - Don can tell from the way that Joe squeezes him, and from his scent, that Joe isn’t upset at all. Don curls himself a little closer to Joe and continues nuzzling. There are a few hairs on the side and back of Joe’s neck that are too short to be tied up into his ponytail, but so soft that nuzzling them feels absolutely wonderful. Don shifts himself just enough to get access to them, his relaxed body sinking into Joe’s a little more as he does so. Cuddling with Joe like this is kind of like being a kitten again, touching innocently just for the sake of feeling good and warm and loved. It’s a way of returning to a mentality of safety and security, like going back to a time before the world ever had a chance to show him what cruelty was like. Don wonders if it might be this way for Joe, too; if it is, Don is very happy to be able to return that favor.

-

Don doesn't say anything about the mewing; in fact he snuggles closer and continues to nuzzle Joe's neck, right along some of the most ticklish spots as if to say he doesn't mind if Joe does it again. Joe won't be caught off-guard again so easily though! He draws his tail back, uncurling it from around Don's and letting it drag a little as he does so, brushing the fur of both of their tails down flat in opposing directions, and then strokes along part of the length of Don's with his own a few times soothingly. He starts to run his hands up and down Don's back at the same time too, enjoying the way Don feels so warm and so at ease. Before he knows it a soft, tiny murmur of a purr is escaping his throat.

-

Don squeaks softly as Joe moves his tail to run it up and down the length of Don’s. Don loves having his tail stroked, and Joe knows how to do it just the way Don likes, smooth and gentle and soft. And there’s something especially nice about it being done with Joe’s tail, a kind of symmetry, plus the knowledge that Joe’s tail is likely sensitive like Don’s and that he shares that same kind of pleasant sensation. The way Joe runs his hands over the length of Don’s back feels wonderful too, and makes him arch his spine, squirming a little to get as much of the touch as possible. And when he hears the slight rumble of Joe’s purr, Don feels nearly euphoric. “Mmm, Joe...” he sighs, blissfully calm and content.

-

His tail reacts to sensation all the way from base to tip; Joe might have fur of his own but his is always so cool and sleek, while Don's is warm and thick and fluffy, so when their tails touch one another the feeling is completely different to Joe's fur touching his own, and especially different to skin touching it. It's that warm softness that has got him purring, and when Don speaks Joe really doesn't know what to say so he simply purrs a little more emphatically in response, leaning in a little as he uses his arms to bring Don closer, though he's practically in Joe's lap by now anyway. He could almost curl himself around Don from head to tail and go to sleep right now.

-

Joe pulls Don closer, and Don can feel his purring growing stronger, vibrating at a slightly lower frequency than Don’s. Don clings to him a little more tightly and draws his legs up onto the couch so that he can sprawl them out. He leans his weight forward to urge Joe to lie down beneath him - surely dinner won’t be for a little while yet, and it’s always nice to get a nap, especially when it’s a nap with Joe. Catpeople need more sleep than humans anyway, and the warm, pleasant feeling of cuddling with another catperson is very conducive to sleep. And maybe Don is a little more tired than usual thanks to being kept up late by Marvelous’s latest new toys.

-

Maybe Joe is a little more pliable himself than he'd thought after all that enjoyment he had gotten out of focusing on Don's relaxation; he leans back against the couch with only a little encouragement, sliding and shifting his hips until he is laying down on the cushions properly. His arms are still around Don, of course, but it was Don's idea in the first place so he follows willingly enough, until he is stretched out on top of Joe, and Joe can slide his hands further down Don's back to settle around him a little more loosely, but still securely. He closes his eyes and lets one of his hands move to rest over the base of Don's tail, fingers not pressing at all, but the feel of them still lingering there.

-

It only takes a little bit of shifting for the two of them to lie down, with Don stretched out on top of Joe. He rests his head against Joe’s chest so that he’s tucked under Joe’s chin, one of his ears folded against the underside of Joe’s jaw. Joe’s hands slip further down his back, and one goes all the way down to the base of Don’s tail. Don mews, his hips moving involuntarily against Joe’s at being touched in such a sensitive place. It’s not a particularly firm touch, but the lightness of it makes it tickly and almost teasing. And rolling his hips against Joe’s certainly hadn’t done anything to make him feel less sensitive. He’s much too relaxed for the stimulation to make him go tense, though; it just adds to the haze of pleasure that’s already clouding his mind, and he squirms a bit before moving one hand to run it over Joe’s chest, the definition of his muscles clear even through the fabric of his shirt.

-

Joe understands the hazy sensation that appears to be coming over Don because he feels it himself; sleepy enough to sleep if he chose to surrender to it right this second - it's so easy just to switch from conscious to unconscious, and whilst some humans seem to manage it too Joe thinks it's another one of the handy traits that come from being a catperson - but also just wakeful enough to still want to touch and feel. Don reacts to the fingers at the base of his tail, but neither of them are going to do anything more about it because Joe's intention was only ever to do that much, and Don's warm hand on his chest is probably just touching with idle curiosity more than anything too. Joe contents himself by angling his chin just out of the way so that he can nuzzle the top of Don's head with his cheek again, and yawns.

-

Don lets out another pleasant sigh when Joe rubs his cheek against the top of his head again. It’s still remarkable just how safe and warm he always feels with Joe, and has from the first time they’d met. There’s something about Joe that gives him a sense of security and comfort, and he knows he’s not the only one; Joe’s entire job at the clinic is to help other catpeople feel safe and calm when they’re being treated or examined, and while Joe himself maintains that he’s “just normal” and not particularly remarkable at it, Dr. Sid has always said otherwise, and Don’s personal experience with Joe leads him to believe that Dr. Sid has the right of it. Joe simply exudes a sense of protectiveness that’s impossible to ignore. It’s why Don can relax with him so easily, and settle into that sleepy haze in barely a few minutes. Joe’s yawn reminds Don of how sleepy he is himself, and he swishes his tail softly over Joe’s leg before letting sleep overtake him, still purring even after becoming unconscious.

-

Joe might have carved out a life for himself - almost accidentally, and only thanks to Sid's generosity - in comforting and caring for others in ways he has been sadly lacking in up until now for years himself, but the number of people he is comfortable letting down his own guard down front of is still incredibly small. Don is only one of two, after all, but that's why it matters so much. The fewer there are, the more special they are. Joe can admit he may have been hasty in his feelings towards Don because of how cute he is, and how vulnerable he'd seemed when they had first met, and yet: don't most of the catpeople Joe meet now? It's the circumstances they meet in that often dictate that. Joe could have sensed something deeper within Don that assured Joe he could be trusted, he supposes. The point is that there's almost nobody else he could fall asleep with like this and know that not only will he be safe, he will keep the other person feeling safe too. Those are the thoughts that Joe falls asleep with, a tiny smile curling up the corners of his mouth.
